2008 has been a hectic year for us
First of all,
Danny is legally Kim & Mike's son now,
his adoption was final on National Adoption Day.
He's a busy active little 17 month old!

Avery has been a busy little boy as usual
He's still at Tutu & Me
attending the program every Tuesdays and Wednesdays
He is now 4 and a 1/2
still loving his trains
He'll be starting the head start program at Jefferson's on January 13th
He's a little afraid but we all went thru that, didn't we??

Kevin who is now 18 is working at
Sears at Ala Moana Center
in the Merchandise Pick Up Department
and loving it.
What he hates about it is he normally starts early
in the morning and the ones that know him,
knows that he's not a morning person.

As for me, I have not been getting any better.
still having eye problems
vision is still not clear
and still suffering from chronic neck & back pain

We all hope that everyone stays healthy for
the new year!
Stay in touch!!

Our New Year's Day Tradition

Since I was raised in a traditional Japanese cultured family,
our New Year's day is spent with our family, and visiting
Buddhist/Shinto shrines. Although my kids and I aren't Buddhist
or Shinto, we still honor our ancestors by carrying on the tradition.

Let me start from New Year's Eve. We usually go to pick up mochi (Japanese rice cake) and okazari mochi" from my biological mom in the afternoon. Okazari mochi is 2 mochi - 1 large and 1 small on top of the large one. It is placed on the good luck paper, and some greens, with a tangerine with the leaves still on it, and some rice wrapped in white paper. We put one in our house, and one in the car for good luck. Okazari

Fireworks During the eve night is when I usually start preparing for our New Year's feast.
Our New Year's feast usually consists of "Nishime" which is a Japanese Pot Stew,
our New Year's mochi soup which is called "Ozoni" and some other kinds of food
called "Osechi Ryori".
New Year'e eve is when I usually clean and cut all the vegetables so it's easier
for me in the morning.

I usually get up around 5:30am New Year's day to make our traditional New Year's soup, and make the Nishime.

After everyone gets up and we've eaten our good luck soup, we usually head out to the temples.
We first cleanse our hands.... then give offerings, and the priest prays for us. After that, we take a family picture.
After the visit to the Shinto temple, we then head to the Buddhist temple which is my dad's temple.
This year will be different since Kevin has to work on New Year's Day at 7am.
He'll have to leave the house at 6am so he won't have his ozoni until he gets home
from work after 2pm.
